About the Course Director: Julian Thorne

Julian Thorne has worked in magazine subscriptions for over 25 years, starting at Dennis Publishing where he worked his way up to become the Circulation Director responsible for both retail and subscription revenues before moving to join Saga as the Marketing Director of Saga’s Media Division. He then went on to be CEO of Dovetail Services the UK’s then leading magazine subscriptions fulfilment company.

In 2014 Julian left Dovetail to set up The Big Wheel Consultancy to provide specialist marketing consultancy, data insight services and subscription marketing training to publishers seeking to maximise their membership, subscriptions and/or recurring revenues. The Big Wheel Consultancy has worked with a wide range of B2B and B2C publishing companies including The Economist, Hearst, TI Media, The Telegraph, Shard Media Group and MBI.

Julian is the author of the InPublishing Guide to Retention Strategies for Publishers, a Fellow of the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing and a regular speaker at industry events. He is also a non-executive director of what he believes is the world’s best history magazine, History Today.
